Nestled on a gentle slope of the Vellappara–Peruvanthanam Road, Gairah is a small, hosted retreat — three cottage categories, plantation trails, waterfalls within walking distance, and a team that has answered the door at every hour since we opened.
I — The estate
Urumbikkara is a lesser-known hill station in the Western Ghats — pristine, untouched, off the road. We built Gairah for the adventure traveller, the wellness seeker and the nature lover, and we kept it modest on purpose: fewer cottages, more attention.
Mornings arrive as mist over the ranges. Afternoons are for jeep trails, waterfalls and plantation walks. Evenings belong to the fire and to whatever the kitchen has been slow-cooking since noon.

It is a promise we drive ourselves to deliver, twenty-four hours a day. Vinay Nair and his team live on the estate — arranging the off-road rides, the tent stays on the hill, the late dinners and the early flasks of tea. It is a journey we wouldn't miss for the world, and we'd like you to be part of it.

Getting here
The resort is nestled on a gentle slope of the Vellappara–Peruvanthanam Road, seventy-five minutes from the Kottayam rail terminus and nineteen kilometres from Mundakkayam bus station. Tell us your arrival time and we will guide you in.

IV — The pool
Newly addedThe water runs flush to the rim and falls away down the slope — at the far end there is nothing between you and the ranges. Cut into the hillside in stone, with lights that come up warm along the terracing as the sky goes blue.

The name
The word has its roots in Malay — passion, zest, spirit, warmth, peacefulness. It reflects the singular objective of a homely destination in wild travels.
Our mark carries an undulating line: the roads one takes, or makes, to follow a passion. Read it a moment longer and you will find our favourite symbol of magnificence in the wild — the Kerala tusker.

VI — The trail
Urumbikkara is a high-altitude sanctuary at the threshold of the Idukki and Kottayam districts. Rising to 3,500 feet, these hills are a lost world of colonial history and untamed nature.
Far from the crowded tourist circuits, it is a mosaic of misty tea estates, deep cardamom valleys and rocky ridges that open onto the Sahyadri range. A place for the true explorer — one who seeks the silence of the mountains and the thrill of the off-road trail.

2 kmThe atmospheric ruins of an 18th-century bungalow built by the Irish planter John Joseph Murphy — a glimpse straight into the region’s colonial past.
A short trek or drive, ending on sunset views over sprawling tea gardens. History and scenery in the same hour.
3 kmA striking steel walking bridge crosses directly over the second drop of this two-tiered fall — locally known as Sayippan Palam, the Foreigner’s Bridge.
Photograph it from the bridge itself, or take the rocky steps near the Vadakkemala Mahadeva Temple for a closer perspective.
6 kmThe most comprehensive and dramatic view of the Pappani Waterfalls, and a key landmark of the Urumbikkara range.
A place to pause in the cooling mist, with the thunder of the falls filling the whole valley.
6 kmA serene fall for a quick visit or a refreshing dip, with no long trek required. Natural rocky outcrops make ideal places to sit back and unwind.
6 kmA breathtaking 360-degree horizon from the highest accessible peak in the range. On clear days the views stretch endlessly into the distance.
Shifting mist rises through the valley and blankets the grassy meadows — a cloud walk, in every sense.
7 kmHidden deep within the forest, a natural rock pool fed by a gentle cascade — calm, secluded, and among the most private water bodies in Urumbikkara.
